Agallamh na Seanórach
Tar éis Chatha Gabhra ba bheag den bhFiann a bhí fágtha, agus na buíonta beaga ‘s dhéanfadh dhá naonúr ar fad a tháinig slán bhíodar scaipthe ar fud na hÉireann. Tar éis dhá chéad bliain ní raibh fágtha dóibh ach Oisín a raibh i dTír na nÓg agus Caoilte mac Ronáin. Lá dá raibh Caoilte amach ag taisteal thit an oíche air agus d’iarr sé aíocht na hoíche ar Chámha, an bheanfhlaith. Fuair sin uaithi agus d’fhan sé trí lá léi agus ina dhiaidh sin thug Caoilte aghaidh ar Ráth Droma Dearg mar a raibh Naomh Pádraig agus a chuid cléireach ag canadh aifrinn.
After the Battle of Gabhra it was few of the Fianna that were left, and the small bands that would make nineteen men altogether that survived they were scattered throughout Ireland. After two hundred years there wasn’t left of them but Oisín who was in the Land of Youth and Caoilte mac Ronáin. One day that Caoilte was out travelling, the night descended on him and he asked night hospitality of Cámha, the princess. He got that from her and he stayed three days with her and after that Caoilte set out for Ráth Droma Dearg where Saint Patrick and his clerics were singing mass.
Nuair a chonaic na cléirigh an fear mór agus a choin chucu ghabh scanradh iad. Labhair Pádraig le Caoilte mac Ronáin agus chuir sé roinnt ceisteanna air. Bhí imní air go mb’fhéidir nár cheart dó bheith ag éisteacht le scéalta Chaoilte, agus an lá ina dhiaidh sin chuir sé ceist ar a ainglí coimhdeachta faoin scéal. Sé an freagra a fuair sé gur cheart dó éisteacht agus na scéalta a scríobh síos.
When the clerics saw the great man and his two wolfhounds coming towards them they were scared. Patrick spoke with Caoilte mac Ronáin and he put some questions to him. He was worried that maybe it wouldn’t be right for him to be listening to Caoilte’s stories, and the following day he asked his guardian angels about the situation. It is the answer that he got that it would be right for him to listen and the stories to write down.
Baisteadh Caoilte ansin, agus chuaigh Pádraig agus Caoilte tríd an tír le chéile. Gach áit ina gcasfaí iad chuirfeadh sé rud éigin a bhain don bhFiann i gcuimhne do Chaoilte, agus d’inseódh sé scéal faoi. Rinne Pádraig a lán ceistiúcháin ar Chaoilte, freisin, gur bhain sé a lán eolais amach mar sin faoin bhFiann agus faoi na nósa a bhí acu. I gceann tréimhse tháinig siad go Teamhair agus bhí Oisín ansin rompu ar ais ó Thír na nÓg, agus rinne Pádraig an taisteal céanna leis.
Caoilte was baptised then, and Patrick and Caoilte went through the country together. Everyplace in which they would happen, it would remind Caoilte of something that pertained to the Fianna, and he would tell a story about it. Patrick did a lot of questioning of Caoilte, also, until he got a lot of knowledge out like that about the Fianna and about the manners that they had. After a period, they came to Tara and Oisín was there before them back from the Land of Youth, and Patrick made the same journey with him.
Chuir Caoilte ‘s Oisín a mbéal le talamh agus d’éagadar i dTeamhair.
Caoilte and Oisín put their mouths to the ground and they died at Tara.
