Lúnadán
The loon is the provincial bird of Ontario and appears on the one-dollar coin (the Loonie). It is a large diving bird known for its striking appearance and haunting calls. The loon's calls range from a long and eerie wail that carries over the water, to yodels, hoots, and other short sounds.
“Lóma” can also mean a boor or ignorant person (or even stronger, a “lóma gan eolas” meaning a boor without knowledge).
A “lóma luirseach” means a lazy clownish fool of a person.
In the Gaelic of Cape Breton, the loon’s call is heard to say “Deoch, deoch, deoch 's an loch ag trá" meaning “a drink, a drink, a drink, the lake tide is ebbing.”
