This traditional nonsense rhyme is quite old and widespread, with different variations found throughout Ireland.

Disorder and confusion

Old hoof of a horse

Is it many sons the king has?

A son today, a son yesterday

Twelve sons by midday

You go down to the head of the house

Trying for the egg of the black hen

Mac inniú, mac inné

Ag triail ar ubh na circe duibhe
