Eachtraí Ghiolla an Amaráin Nua: II (1956)
Áralt Ó Tnúthail, composed in Toronto, Ontario
“Tamall ó shin agus mé ag obair chomh tapaidh is féidir mo chéad lón d’fháil, an t-ailtín do ghlanadh, an lón do ghearradh, agus an drámh do chuir i mála, ní raibh ach deich neomaití liom an obair go léir do dhéanamh.
Chuireas an lón i mála agus an rud céanna leis an ndrámh, agus chuireas síos ar bharr an slogair. Rith me isteach i dtolgteach an TV do thiompáil as. Tháinig me amach go tapaidh, bhreith ar an dhá mhála agus léim as an tigh. Chaith mé mála amháin san gcanna mór dráimh agus suas an cnoc liom ar cos in áirde an tram do ghlacadh.
Ar feadh neomaite, agus tar éis thosnaigh an tram, tháinig an t-eolas go mall i m’aigne go raibh an mála an-fhluich.
‘S ea! Ní raibh mo chuid lóin a bhí agam.”
“A while ago I was working as fast as I could to get my breakfast, to clean things up, to prepare the lunch, and to put the garbage in a bag, and I didn’t have but ten minutes in which to do all the work.
I put the lunch in a bag and the same thing with the garbage, and I put them down on top of the drain. I ran into the living room to thump the TV off. I came out quickly, grabbed the two bags and leapt out of the house. I threw one bag into the big garbage can and quickly hightailed it up the hill to catch the tram.
After a minute, after the tram started, the knowledge slowly came upon my mind that the bag was very wet.
Indeed! It wasn’t my lunch that I had.”
